A moderate earthquake jolted the Kanto and Tohoku regions in northeastern Honshu on Friday afternoon, the Meteorological Agency said.

There was no report of casualties or damage to property, police said. Nor did the agency issue a tsunami warning. The quake was followed by a temblor believed to be an aftershock.

The earthquake that struck at 1:37 p.m. registered 3 on the 7-point Japanese intensity scale in wide areas of Tohoku and northern Kanto, including the Miyagi Prefectural city of Ishinomaki, the city of Fukushima, the Fukushima Prefectural cities of Sukagawa and Iwaki and the Ibaraki Prefecture capital of Mito.

The focus of the temblor, which is estimated to have measured 5.9 on the open-ended Richter scale, was located about 30 kilometers below the seabed off Ibaraki Prefecture. (Mainichi)
